Description: This picturesque view of the old Russian town of Yaroslavl was painted by A. Kuklin.
Yaroslavl is quite big town located 260 kilometers to the north from Moscow. It was founded by Yaroslav Mudry (“Wise”) in the 11th century. There are 630 000 inhabitants in the city. The main industries are machinery and oil industry, there's one of the biggest oil companies 'Slavneft' working there.
The scene is painted against the bright gold background. Gold is also used to highlight the architecture, to paint crosses on the cupolas and to stud the black night sky with myriads of stars.
Gold leafy pattern frames the scene; a nice gold pattern can be also found wrapping around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene. The box rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name, Kholui and the title.
