This beautiful piece of authentic Russian artistry was composed by the talented Yevgeniy Dobrin of Kholuy .It depicts a scene from the Russian fairy-tale “Geese and Swans”. In this tale Baba-Yaga's servants, Geese and Swans, kidnap a little boy, Ivanushka. The boy's sister, Alyonushka, sets out in search of him, and in the end of the tale she saves him.
Green and violet are used extensively, two of Dobrin's favorite palette colors. Gold is used scantily here to create a sparkle of Baba-Yaga's earrings and the stars in the dark night sky.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is decorated with Dobrin's style luxuriant gold ornamentation accented with aluminum. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. Inside the lid, Dobrin has written the title ("Brother Ivanushka is a Guest in Baba-Yaga's Hut"), the year of 2008, Kholui and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholui miracle.
