This incomparably beautiful Kholuy box was painted by the highly talented husband and wife artistic duet of Yugeniy and Svelana Vlasovs. It is an original work that is called “Winter”. The box shows the lad and the girl playing snowballs in the forest and enjoying a nice winter day.
The composition looks very festive, radiant and optimistic. Every inch of the moment composed is enhanced tremendously by the golden contours filling the scene with a fantastic glow. Pieces of mother-of-pearl that shimmer magically with green, blue, violet and golden undertones are set into different parts of the composition. Application of mother-of-pearl is unusual for Kholuy School of lacquer miniature painting, and it attracts more attention for this marvelous box. Besides human silhouettes, the composition is filled with rich and very beautiful winter landscape completed with the images of a squirrel, a rabbit and various birds.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is decorated with rich and very intricate gold and silver patterns. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the lid's interior the artists painted in gold an attractive floral pattern. Inside this pattern they wrote their names, a list of materials used, the title, the village name of Kholuy, the year of 2010, and the confirmation that this work is of original design.
