Lubov Shemarova is the author of this small, Palekh box. It shows a recognizable moment from the popular Russian fairy-tale "By the Pike's Will" or "Emelya and the Magic Pike". Here we can see Emelya who has caught the magic pike. In return for releasing her, the Magic Pike offers to fulfill Emelia's wishes.
The scene is drawn in the traditional Palekh style, and richly detailed with gold and aluminum paint. Gold beads decorate the edges of the lid, while the box's sides are adorned with rolling golden filigree.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2007.
