Description:

This marvelous box showing some peasants at a trade fair was painted by Fedoskino artist N.V. Kuznetsov. It's a frosty winter day. Two young girls wrapped in warm shawls have come to a seller of candies to buy some sweets. Behind them, in the background, we can see several kiosks and groups of people buying different goods.
The artist demonstrates filigree skill in decorating small objects with amazing precision. In the foreground he does a painstaking job, creating the characters' individualized faces, their bright shawls adorned with numerous designs and tiny tassels and the texture of their clothing. The people in the background are also well drawn, with quite good facial features, even though they are tiny!
The scene is very colorful, festive and decorative. The white tones of snow don't look monotonous owing to the characters' costumes painted in bright tones. Aluminum powder creates the beautiful radiance of snow and adds a chilly atmosphere to the whole image. In the foreground metallic gold leaf in the characters' costumes (it also can be found in the basket and in the candies) illuminates the scene with a bright twinkling and adds more decorativeness to the scene.
The sides of the box are decorated with intricate gold patterns. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2000).
