Description:

Borisova Olga from Fedoskino created this wonderful portrait of Tsar Peter the Great. O. Borisova is a real professional. Her works are exhibited in the Museum of Fedoskino factory of miniature art. She has done outstanding portraits in the past and this one is no exception.
The prominent personality of Peter I always attracted attention of different artists. This work resembles the portrait painted by Andrey Matveev in 1725 (you can see it here: http://nearyou.narod.ru/art/matveev/petr.html), as well as the work painted by unknown artist in the eighteenth century (you can see it here: http://alexandrov.amr-museum.ru/rus/history/image28.html). Peter the Great made much for development and prosperity of the Russian state. He was the reformer of Russian political system who carried out the policy of Westernization of Russia. Being a talented and resolute personality, he managed to found the Russian fleet and enlarge considerably the territory of Russian state. As a result of Russian- Swedish wars the territories of Lithuania, Estonia and Ingria were joined to Russia. In Ingria Peter the Great established the well-known town of St.-Petersburg, that is one of the most beautiful towns in the world and is considered to be the second capital of Russia.
The portrait is painted against the dark olive background that is restful to the eye and doesn't distract the viewer's attention from the skillfully painted face. The tsar's costume is also very well drawn. The blue ribbon is thrown over the tsar's shoulder. This ribbon is a component of the Order of White Eagle, which was instituted by the Polish king August II in 1705. In 1712 August II and Peter the Great exchanged with rewards in honor of their military alliance against Sweden. Peter I awarded the Polish king with the Order of Andrey Pervozvanny, whereas August II awarded the Russian tsar with the Order of White Eagle.
Intricate and extremely elegant scrollwork frames the portrait, whereas the corners of the box are decorated with the identical gold scrollwork that is a little bigger in size. The edges of the lid are adorned with curling golden scrollwork. The sides of the box are also beautifully ornamented with elegant gold scrollwork.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2002).
