Description:

This beautiful landscape was painted by the master of this genre, Yuriy Dubovikov. The composition perfectly reflects the state of nature before the sunset. Golden sunlight gradually covers the clear blue sky, and floods everything around with its golden radiance. Dark green grass that covers the riverbank, as well as the tops of dark green trees and bushes are highlighted with brown-reddish and orange tones of the setting sun. The mirror-like surface of the river, that reflects the sky, is also gold. Aluminum powder is used to enhance luminescence of the sky and the river. Gold dust seems to have been sprinkled in certain parts of the composition to add an almost unnoticeable sparkle to the piece.
Earthtone paints make up the basis for the palette. Deep greens, browns and grays are the three primary colors used. The details show an expansive landscape that is full of diverse plant-life. To give the illusion of lush grass, and thick growth in the forest, Karapaev uses a technique used by watercolor artists that uses minute variations in solid areas of paint so the land and trees look very fertile. Throughout the background, the artist mixes his oils with aluminum powder to give the scene a surreal glow. He creates intensely real depth by using the layer technique, where he builds his scene to give it a three-dimensional feel. With all of the personal characteristics that went into this painting, it is still a wonderful example of a master's expertise.
The box is constructed out of heavy and dense paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer and the interior is painted with red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box rests on four rounded legs. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1989).
