Description:

This traditional Fedoskino box by Davydov shows a scene from the tale of the Frog Princess. Ivan enters the Tsar's court, holding a frog in his hands that is destined to be his wife. It was the Tsar who told Ivan and his brothers to shoot an arrow blindfolded, into a random direction, and whichever maiden would find the arrow would be the wife of the prince who shot the arrow. Ivan who shot last, ended up shooting the arrow next to a frog.
The composition is multi-colored and vividly decorative. It looks bright and festive owing to bold coloring, mixing gold metal leaf and crushed mother-of-pearl into the oils. The people and their facial expressions are depicted as if they were real; the detailing is tediously managed and shows the artist's steady hand and great skill.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in the village of Fedoskino. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer to paint the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist's name, village and year (1990).
