Mikhail Nikitin from the village of Fedoskino painted this winter landscape in the realistic style. It features the picturesque riverbank. The ground, the trees and the roofs of the huts are covered with white snow. Night is falling. The winter sunset paints the sky with a warm golden glow. The snow and the river realistically reflect this beautiful glow. An inlay of mother-of-pearl is added to create the mirrored shine in the river's water.
The edges of the lid, and the box's sides are decorated with intricate gold ornamentation. The exterior of the box is gray dotted with light blue blurry spots. This is so called "dust resist patterns" that imitate the coloring of a stone. The interior of the box is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition. The box rests on four legs. The work is signed by the artist at the bottom of the composition.
