An empty cask bobs lazily in the wake of a heavy, square sailed ship. The rising sun reveals the misty outline of a hilly port. Few gulls investigate the cask. One can almost hear their cries, and feel the sun's warmth creeping over the choppy water. Another, vessel sits anchored ahead; perhaps its crew is enjoying a lazy morning after a long journey.
The beautiful palette is based on contrast orange and blue colors. Mother-of-pearl creates brilliance of the sun.
The scene is framed with gold beads.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed and dated (2006) by Dunaev.
