Description:

This small box has been painted by Mishin from the village of Fedoskino. It depicts an interpretation of the canvas-on-oil painting called "The Rainbow". Painted in 1873 by Ivan Aivazovsky, it currently hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery in St. Petersburg..
The scene is painted in dark oils to express the ominous and fatal atmosphere of the depicted moment. The shipwrecked sailors struggle with enormous waves trying to save themselves. Mother-of-pearl is set into the middle of the scene to enliven the colors.
The scene is framed with a gold line; another gold line can be found wrapping around the box's sides. Having opened the box, you will be surprised to find a small shell glued to the box's interior bottom!
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, and the year of 2007.
