This beautiful box is a creation of the leading Fedoskino artist Vladislav Maslov. The work is called “A Forest Fairy-Tale”, and shows a maiden looking out of the beautiful house built in the thicket of the forest. The artist has also filled the composition with the images of a cat, a frog, a grasshopper, a raven and a variety of various plants and trees.
The house is painted in cream and brown tones whereas the surrounding landscape is painted in green tones. Mother-of-pearl inlays that have bright orange, green, violet and pink undertones shine through the leaves of a water lily painted in the foreground. Pearl beads are glued to the exterior of the lid to create a magic atmosphere throughout the scene. Gold powder is used to decorate the maiden's costume and some elements of the architecture. The box's sides and the upper and bottom corners of the lid are decorated with an original pattern composed of very thin bands painted over metallic powders.
The exterior of the piece is painted with a creamy white lacquer while the interior is painted with a deep red lacquer mixed with gold powder. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four pearl beads. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, and the year of 2009 on the square, shining piece of mother-of-pearl glued to the lid's interior.
