Description:

This beautiful box was painted by talented Mikhail Tugarinov from the village of Fedoskino. It shows one of the Cathedrals of the Suzdal architectural ensemble. The work is tasteful in its simplicity, and elegant in its originality!
The artist makes supreme usage of the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture. The composition is dream like! The geometric perfection is truly the highlight of the piece. The curvature of the roofs. The hollowed appearance of the bell tower. The realistic shadows which creep across the grounds. All expertly detailed.
The composition is painted in blue and white-yellowish tones. The artist used fragmented golden foil in order to produce the sun's reflective glare on the windows and the roofs. A large inlay of mother-of-pearl focuses the viewer's attention on the cathedral and beautifully decorates the box!
The scene is framed with a gold line. The sides of the box are adorned with gold patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer to paint the interior. The box has a hinge above the scene and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the artist name, name of the composition-"Suzdal" and dated (2009) by the artist.
Additional description:
In the centre of the composition we can see the blue domed Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary that is the center of Suzdal architectural ensemble. This cathedral was built from 1222-1225 on the place on the collapsed cathedral. To the right of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary we can see the Hierarchal Chambers and the octahedral pillar of Bell Tower.
The author of this box is Mikhail Tugarinov. Mikhail Tugarinov was born in 1965 in the small town of Dmitrov, located in the Moscow region. Mikhail graduated from the Fedoskino Art School in 1971 where he studied under the tutelage of such Fedoskino masters as V.D.Antonov and Chizhov. Mikhail paints with oils following closely the style of the Fedoskino lacquered miniature. He likes to depict architecture and winter landscapes. He feels that his technique of painting resembles the style of another famous Fedoskino painter, Piotr Puchkov, but paints his compositions mostly in cold tones, applying traditional painting methods. He, himself, cuts and inlays the mother-of-pearl into the boxes, a process that is very difficult and which not many painters can master.
The artist believes that the quality of painting is the most important element of work. He always painstakingly elaborates and paints every minute detail of a composition and this is one of the reasons why his artworks look extremely realistic. Mikhail doesn't like to complicate his compositions with unnecessary elements. He even considers that it is better not to complete the work rather than make it bulky and pretentious.
It is interesting to note that in his childhood, M. A. Tugarinov didn't want to be an artist. He entered the Fedoskino Art School because most of his friends went there and he didn't know what else to choose. Under the tutelage of his talented teachers in the Art School, Mikhail soon understood that the art of lacquered miniature was his true vocation. In his free time Mikhail also likes to play volleyball.
