Description:

This beautiful peace of art was created by Fedoskino artist Galina Davydova.
The composition is an interpretation of a canvas-on-oil painting called "The ninth wave" (this picture can also be called "The decuman wave"). Painted in 1850 by Ivan Aivazovsky, it currently hangs in the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817-1900) went down in world culture history as romantic painter of seascapes and master of Russian classical landscape. His most popular paintings are "The Rainbow" (1873), "The Black Sea" (1881), "Wave" (1889) and "The Ninth Wave" (1850).
The composition shows shipwrecked sailors about to be engulfed by an enormous wave. It's the early morning. The first rays of sunlight shine on the huge waves, and the largest of them, the ninth wave, draws near the people attempting to save themselves on the ruined mast. Their ship has wrecked and many of their mates have perished. The people know that they will not be able to swim out of the enormous wave. Facing an inevitable death, they clutch the sinking mast and fight for their lives. Despite the tragic nature of the image, the artist clearly admires the beauty of the sea.
The palette of the composition is based on sharp color contrasts. Warm reddish colors of the sky tone beautifully with cold blue-greenish colors of the sea. Thanks to the artist's talent, the sea looks natural and radiant. The details of a painting are amazing!
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Blue lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests flat. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2010).
