Description:

This peaceful landscape has been painted by Fedoskino artist A.G. Zakharov. The scene is dominated by a large oak that overlooks a small stream. The colors taken from the palette are very natural and realistic, which enhances the quality of the landscape in the way it was rendered. Earthtone paints make up the basis for the palette. Deep greens, light-greens and grays are the three primary colors used. The details show an expansive landscape that is full of diverse plant-life. To give the illusion of lush grass, and thick growth in the forest, Zakharov uses a technique used by watercolor artists that uses minute variations in solid areas of paint so the land and trees look very fertile. The background is painted vaguely, according to the rules of perspective, whereas the trees and plants in the foreground are pained distinctly and precisely. Gold metallic powder is used to highlight the trees and the grass to create the effect of sunlight. Aluminum powder is used to paint the ripple surface the river which reflects the gray sky.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A gold line frames the composition, while the sides of the box are decorated with intricate gold patterns. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The Fedoskino "troika" insignia can be found on the interior of the lid. The box is signed with the artist's name, village and year (2002).
