Alexey Chirkov is the artist who painted the composition on this box. It shows a scene from the story of "The Scarlet Sails" written by Alexander Green (1880-1932), one of the most popular Russian writers. Green is adored by Russian readers for the romantic spirit that is in every of his books.
"The Scarlet Sails" is a story about the romantic and very poor girl, Asole, who dreams that one day a handsome prince will marry her, and take her away from the town where she lives. Every day she sits on the seashore and waits for the ship with scarlet sails, and believes that her prince is on board of this ship. In the end of this story her dream comes true...
For this composition the artist has used a bright (aluminum) palette, against it he has used scarlet colors as a contrast.
Golden foil and colour has used throughout the scene to outline and detail girl's dress, sails and flowers on a table.
The composition is framed with a rich golden band. The box's sides are decorated with a bright mixture of aluminum and blue oil colours.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four feet. The work is signed with the initials of the artist's name.
