Description:

This beautiful box was created by the famous Fedoskino artist Piotr Puchkov, whose works are displayed in almost every major book on Fedoskino lacquer miniature painting. This piece is very unique because Puchkov is known for painting well-known Russian architecture. He usually does not paint genre scenes, but this one is no less spectacular than his other works. The composition shows a classic Fedoskino scene, depicting a moment from folk life. Three young girls stand at the well and talk. The subject of their conversation is so absorbing that they have stopped filling pails with water. Perhaps they discuss some village news or just joke with each other.
The scene in general is well drawn, and the figures in the foreground are particularly detailed. The artist scrupulously paints the girls' faces, their clothes and multicolored patterns on their shawls. Small figures of people in the background give depth to the composition.
The composition is mostly painted in white bluish tones that suit perfectly for the depiction of a winter scene. Metallic foil enlivens the girls' clothes and creates the effect of alight windows. Gold foil shines beautifully and helps to keep the scene from becoming monotonous, and even enhances the cool feeling of the work.
The box is a great example of traditional art from this village. It is made out of high-quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge located to the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed with the name of the artist, village and year (1977).
