Description:

This female portrait has been masterfully painted by the talented Fedoskino artist Nickolay Pavlovich Aldoshkin (1931-1989) in 1957. This work is an interpretation of a canvas-on-oil painting called "Turk Woman" painted in 1840 by the outstanding Russian artist Karl Brulov (1799-1852, the author of world famous artwork "The Last Day of Pompeii"). It currently hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery.
The author of this portrait's original, Karl Brulov, traveled much during his life and visited many countries. He lived in Italy for a long time, and visited Greece, Turkey, Asia Minor and a lot of other interesting places. This work was painted by him after visiting Turkey. The young woman depicted here is dressed in the Turkish national costume made in the fashion of eighteen century.
Many kinds of brushstrokes and techniques have been used here to create the necessary effect to bring this composition to life. The amount of attention to all the elements of the scene is incredible. The woman's face is especially detailed and reproduces the expressions of the original beautifully.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box has a hinge from the top of the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed by the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino,1957. The box's sides and the lid was fixed and covered with new lacquer and paint.
