Description:

This enticing piece was created by talented Fedoskino artist Sergey Knyazev. Passionate brushstrokes and brilliant technique compose this masterful representation. The surface here, the canvas to display genuine imagination.
Here the artist depicts a young woman who went out of the cathedral where she was praying the whole morning. Leaving the dark room of the cathedral lit only by burning candles, she found herself in the open air and the bright sun dazzled her. She looked round and amazed the beauty of nature surrounding her. It was early spring, the sun was shinning brightly in the deep blue sky, and the white snow melted under her legs.
The scene is painted in blue, white, and red tones over different underlayers. The sky, and the cathedral are painted over a large piece of mother-of-pearl and aluminum powder; this creates brilliance of the sky and depth of the scene. Aluminum powder is also used to highlight the bright blue river and the tree depicted in the foreground. Gold dust is used as an underlayer for the wooden house, the girl's rich costume, and the dry grass peeping out from the melting snow. Gold paint details the branches of the trees, the dry plants and the girl's costume. The most laborious work is done while decorating the girl's costume with tiny gold patterns. In this work the artist makes supreme usage of the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture. The composition is dream-like. It looks strikingly real!
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. The composition is framed with a gold line. Black lacquer mixed with gold dust is used to paint its exterior while traditional red lacquer completes its interior. The sides of the box are framed with original gold patterns composed of different forest plants, flowers and grass. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on a small platform. The work is signed, dated (2005) and titled ("Spring Sun") by the artist.
