Description:

Alexander Mikheev of Fedoskino is one of the most talented artists in the village. His work runs the fine line of surrealism and classic realism. His extensive knowledge of the art of painting and how to use his materials puts him above many of his peers. The international community has taken notice by placing them in private collections throughout Europe and America.
The work is called "Caprice", and shows the beautiful autumn landscape. The coloring of the scene explains this strange title. It is based on sharp contrasts. The tree depicted in the foreground is painted in bright emerald tones; beautiful blending of red and gold tones is used to depict the sky and the leaves falling down from the tree's crown; the architecture and two human figures are painted in white tones. The scene is painted over a layer of gold metal powder. The most bright part of the composition are the falling leaves that shine with gold against the white monotonous architecture.
The box's exterior including the edges of the lid, the box's sides and external bottom are decorated with extravagant gold and aluminum patterns. These patterns look like sketches of leaves, puddles, different scrolls, spots and dots. They fit perfectly for the autumnal theme in the scene.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while dark red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed, dated (2005) and titled by the artist at the bottom of the composition.
