Description:

Dmitry Rogatov from the village of Fedoskino created this interesting work. It depicts the main characters of the Russian folk fairy-tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful". Vasilisa is a little girl who has a magic doll that is ready to fulfill all her wishes. The girl received this doll from her mother who later died. Baba-Yaga is the wicked forest witch who eats people just like chicken. One day Vasilisa is sent to Baba-Yaga to ask her for light by her cruel stepmother who hopes that Baba-Yaga will kill the girl. The witch promises to give the girl light if she fulfills all her tasks. With the help of her magic doll, Vasilisa manages to fulfill all her work, receives light and successfully comes back home.
Here Rogatov depicted a moment when Vasilisa asks Baba-Yaga to give her light. To paint this scene he used a variety of colors that he applied against the white background. Aluminum paint highlights the characters' costumes, Baba-Yaga's house and some areas of the landscape. Mother-of-pearl is set into Vasilisa's apron and dress to fill the scene with a magic sparkle. The white background chosen for this scene spreads on the box's sides.
Gold line frames the scene, and another gold line decorates the box's sides. The box's bottom is flat and covered with black lacquer; the box's interior is covered with red lacquer. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. It is signed with the artist's name and the year of 2006.
