Description:

This splendid rectangular box is creation of Fedoskino artist Igor Isaev. Its exterior is covered with aluminum powder, and then sprinkled with violet paint. The lid is decorated with the oval scene painted in oils over a large piece of mother-of-pearl (unbroken shell). It depicts the flock of martins (or "town swallows") flying over an old Russian town. It is autumn, and the birds leave the Russian countryside to spend the cold winter in south countries. The trees are covered with bright orange foliage. Gold paint is used to make the faded orange foliage more expressive. The wooden architecture built according to the fashion of 19th century is splendidly painted here. Isaev painstakingly drawn the carved wooden ornamentation on the roofs of the houses, and detailed each wooden board the houses are built out of. As this scene is painted over the mother-of-pearl, it sparkles like a diamond in the bright sun. The box's lid is also adorned with paintings of martins that are meant to be the members of the flock of martins drawn within the oval scene. They fly from the left side of the box's lid towards the oval scene, and seem to penetrate into it. One of the birds is ready to swallow a fly, - one of our enlarged photos feature this moment.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Its red lacquered interior is sprinkled with black paint on the corners. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box sits flat. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2006, and the title ("Flight of Martins").
