Description:

Undoubtedly, this alluring box painted by Margarita Belova will be a splendid present for the forthcoming New Year celebration! It is called "The New Year's Feast", and features three Russian beauties dressed in the festive warm clothes bordered with fur. They stand under the New Year's tree admiring bright multicolored balls, sparkling garlands and other decorations. Their eyes shine brightly, as they are eager to begin the feast!
The scene is painted in green and blue tones over a large piece of mother-of-pearl that shines through the girls' figures. Lustrous gold and aluminum paints are used to detail the girls' head-dresses, their warm clothes and create the brilliance of balls and garlands that decorate the New Year's tree.
Here the artist makes supreme usage of the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, she creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture.
The box's exterior is covered with black lacquer, and decorated with luxuriant silver scan patterns (made of tiny shapes hand punched from silver metal sheets, and then glued to the box manually). The box's interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Fedoskino. This box is dream-like!
