Description:

This heavenly piece of exquisite Russian artistry was composed by the talented Sergey Knyazev from the village of Fedoskino. Each of his boxes is a true work of art, and not many contemporary artists can compete with him in painting technique, sense of color and choice of a theme. He becomes one of the most impressive and recognizable modern Fedoskino artists.
The work is called "In the Autumn Park", and features two elegant ladies strolling in the park, hiding from the bright sun in the shade of their lace parasols. The foliage of maples is orange-red. It's so pleasant to enjoy the last sunny days of Indian summer before beginning of dull, cold, and rainy weather.
The figures of ladies are painted in blue oils, and detailed with gold and aluminum paints. Gold is also used to highlight the foliage of trees. The artist displays his skill in painting innumerable number of tiny decorative elements to reproduce the lace material of the ladies' luxuriant dresses and their parasols. Large oval piece of mother-of-pearl shines through the parasol of the lady depicted on the left, while the parasol of another lady is painted over aluminum powder. Mother-of-pearl also produces brilliance of the ribbons that decorate the girls' heads, and creates the depth of the blue pinkish sky.
Here the artist makes supreme usage of the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture.
The scene is framed with a gold line; another gold line wraps around the bottom part of the box's body. The box's sides are decorated with the complex ornamentation that continues the theme of an autumn park. It is painted in gold and aluminum paints, and features the old park with its bridges, arches, antique columns, vases and falling golden maple leafs.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. The interior of the box is covered with red lacquer; the box's exterior is covered with black lacquer. The lid is hinged at top, and the box rests on legs. The artist signed, titled and dated (2006) his work in gold paints on the lid's interior.
