Description:

This is another luxuriant creation of Nikolay Zotov. Brilliantly painted and adorned with modelled decorative elements, it is a real work of art! Its theme is based on the Russian fairy "Scarlet Flower" written by S. Aksakov. The tale is very similar to what we know today as "Beauty and the Beast." In this tale t a beautiful girl loves a horrible beast and in the end her sincere love destroys evil spell and the horrible beast turns into the handsome prince.
The box rests on the modelled pedestal. An oval large piece of mother-of-pearl also rests on this modeled pedestal, and leans against the box's body. The box, the modelled pedestal and the oval piece of mother-of-pearl are a single whole of this splendid work.
The entire surface of the box is covered with miniature painting including the lid, and all four sides. Here we can see the medieval castle of the beast, the scarlet flower, the merchant's daughter spinning yearn (she is forced to live in the beast's enchanted kingdom), the dining-room table of the beast. The figurine of the scarlet flower is attached to the left part of the box's lid. The scene painted on the oval piece of mother-of-pearl shows the ship approaching the enchanted kingdom of the beast.
The scenes are painted in delicate green, pink, lilac and blue tones against the light grey background. Light grey tone has been also chosen to cover the box's exterior. Gold paint is used to detail the characters' costumes, the scarlet flower, the ship and some other elements. The box's interior is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged at top. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Fedoskino.
