Description:

This attractive box has been created by the outstanding Fedoskino artist Alexander Mikheev. It shows the spectacular view of a Russian cathedral at night. The color palette includes only blue and white tones but the effect of their combination is stunning! The architecture and the surrounding landscape seem to be lit by the cold moon. Almost invisible silver dust is spread throughout the scene to fill it with a magic sparkle.
Here the artist makes supreme usage of the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth, perspective and beautiful texture.
On the box's sides Mikheev has written an extract from the poem written by the famous Russian poet Nikolay Rubtsov (1936-1971) who in his lyrical poetry extolled the beauty of Russian nature. This extract can be translated into English as following:

“What a wonderful view of the native land!
Birches and peasant houses are scattered on the hills,
And the majestic cathedral reflected on the water,
Reminds us of bygone centuries….

The blue ribbon wraps around the lower part of the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskno and the year of 2007.
