Alexander Chirkov is the author of this gorgeous box. It shows the Archangel Cathedral situated on the territory of the Moscow Kremlin architectural ensemble. From the left of the Archangel Cathedral we can see the fragment of the Cathedral of Annunciation while in the far background the fragment of the Belfry of Ivan the Great is depicted.
The Archangel Cathedral was built in 1505-1508 in the time of Grand Prince Ivan III. Designed by the Italian architect Alevisio Novy, it has survived to date. The cathedral that bears the name of Archangel Mikhail, the guardian of princes and Russian warriors, was to become the sepulcher of grand princes.
The palette is based on a realistic blend of paints that gives an accurate portrayal of the architecture. Mother-of-pearl shines through the architecture of the Archangel Cathedral whereas the architecture of other buildings is highlighted with lustrous silver paint. Silver paint also creates brilliance of the clouds, the trees, the road and the grass.
Two parallel metal silver threads wrap around the box's sides as an original decoration.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, and the title (‘Moscow. The Archangel Cathedral').
