Description:

The world-known tempera-on-canvas painting “Madonna with a Flower” or “Madonna Benois” inspired Antonova S. to create this gorgeous box. This masterpiece was painted in 1478 by Leonardo da Vinci.
For centuries, “Madonna with a Flower” was considered lost. Only in 1909, the architect Leon Benois sensationally exhibited it in St. Petersburg as part of his father-law's collection. The painting had been apparently brought from Italy to Russia by the notable connoisseur Alexander Korsakov in the 1790s. Upon Korsakov's death, it was sold by his son to the Astrakhan merchant Sapozhnikov for 1400 roubles, and so passed by inheritance to the Benois family in 1880. Later Leon Benois sold the painting to the Hermitage Museum in 1914. Ever since then, it has been exhibited in St. Petersburg.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene, and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed by the artist.
