This charming box painted on the New Year theme is a wonderful creation of Yelena Khomitinnikova. Yelena is a member of the Union of Artists, and this fact confirms her high level qualification in lacquer miniature art that not many artists are proud to be awarded with.
The box shows Ded Moroz (the Russians call Santa “Ded Moroz" or "Father Frost”) and his granddaughter, Snegurochka, sledging through the winter forest on New Year's Eve. They are in a great hurry because children wait for their presents. Forest animals and birds accompany their sledge pulled by a deer.
White tones of oils suitable for reproduction a winter scene dominate here. Shining pieces of mother-of-pearl help to create a fairy-tale atmosphere. A large piece of mother-of-pearl that has bright green, lilac and pink undertones produces the radiance of northern lights. Pieces of mother-of-pearl can be also found shining through the characters' costumes, and through the deer's saddle. Gold paint is used to draw the birds, and to detail the characters' costumes. The deer's horns are highlighted with silver paint. Silver paint is also used to paint the snowflakes on the box's exterior bottom. Very beautiful!
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino, and the year of 2007 in silver paint on the box's exterior bottom.
