Description:

This splendid box has been painted by Yuriy Mikhalyov from the village of Fedoskino.
Here we can see the picturesque view of St. Petersburg. Two gold winged bronze lions located on the stone pedestal of the bridge decorate the embankment of the Neva River. At the background of the composition the artist has depicted the Savior on the Blood Cathedral(one of the most famous and prettiest in St.Petersburg).
The scene is painted in different shades of blue and gray. These tones correspond perfectly to the atmosphere of the city called "Russian Venice". The architecture, the sky and the rippled surface of the river are highlighted with brilliant aluminum powder. It creates a very beautiful visual effect. Bright gold paints are used to paint one of the Cathedral's domes, and the wings of the lions. Gold, sparkling wings of the lions are the embellishment of the whole scene. A large piece of mother-of-pearl is inlaid in the portion of the river. It helps to reproduce realistically the reflection of sunrays on the water. The scene is framed with a blue band outlined with a thin white line that tone with the whole palette of the scene. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the scene while red lacquer completes the interior of the piece. For additional decoration the sides of the box are covered with shinning gold dots. Another white line frames the small platform on which the box rests.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. It is hinged from the left of the composition. The work is signed by the artist in black oils at the bottom of the composition.
