Description:

This beautiful portrait piece was painted by the talented Yugeniy Dokuchaev of Fedoskino. It is an adaptation of the original painted in 1838 by Paul Delaroche (1797-1859), a French academic school artist who painted a lot of historical paintings. Dokuchaev has added his personal artistic idea to Delaroche's original by painting the Russian fleet at the background while in the original the background is filled with the winter landscape. He has done this change to accentuate the fact that Peter the Great is the founder of Russian fleet.
An alluring portrait of Tsar Peter I, also known as Peter the Great. A portrait painted with delicate form and execution, such as this, grants a human quality that is difficult to duplicate in most pieces. Realistic detail is the prime feature of Dokuchaev's work.
The portrait is framed with a thin gold line. Two parallel gold lines wrap around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the portrait, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name.
