Description:

This enchanting box has been drawn by Ye. Nechaeva from the village of Fedoskino. It shows a scene from the Poland fairy-tale "The Magic Apple Tree". A kind sorceress showed the lad, Vladislav, the magic apple tree. Rubies, sapphires and golden apples were scattered around the magic apple tree. "You may choose anything you like", said the sorceress, "if you take the rubies you will be the handsomest lad in the world, if you take the sapphires you will be very rich, and if you take a golden apple you will help people and bring happiness to your mother". Vladislav chose the golden apple and became a doctor. With the help of the magic tree he could heal the king.
Various shades of light blue oils help the artist to create the atmosphere of the moonlit garden. Gold paint is used to paint the crescent, each of the apples, and also to detail the characters' costumes and some of the plants.
Intricate and very beautiful patterns composed of silver and gold punch-outs (scan patterns) decorate the edges of the lid and the edges of the box's exterior bottom. In the middle of the box's exterior bottom there is a gorgeous star-shaped pattern composed of gold and silver punch-outs.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the year of 2008.
