Description:

Created by one of the true Fedoskino masters, Maria Wagner, this beautiful lacquer box shows a scene from the tale "Scarlet Flower" written by S.T. Aksakov that is similar to the American tale "Beauty and the Beast". This thrilling tale tells about love of a beautiful girl and a horrible beast that in the end turns into a handsome prince.
Here the artist has painted a recognizable moment from the tale. The beast has turned into a handsome prince, and the loving couple is very happy to be together. Here Wagner uses an expressive palette with a wide spectrum of color to fully portray the detail. Her use of supplementary mediums, like aluminum powder and mother-of-pearl inlay (set into the most part of the box's lid) enhances the already vibrant palette. By using expert layering techniques, tremendous depth can be felt by the eye.
The seashell-shaped box is constructed from paper-mache. The box's exterior imitates a stone color (gold blurry spots and veins are scattered the black lacquered surface. The interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Fedoskino.
