Description:

This enticing Fedoskino box is a splendid example of how Russian lacquer miniature artists are able to bring hand-painted masterpieces into common people's homes. “Portrait of Princess Marya Mikhailovna Volkonskaya” as this work is entitled was originally painted on canvas by Konstantin Makovsky in 1884. This masterpiece is exhibited in the National Museum of Georgia.
The portrait is framed with a gold line. The box's sides are decorated with elegant tartan pattern painted in red and white oils and outlined with gold.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the left of the portrait, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's initials, and the year of 2004.
