One of the leading Fedoskino artists, Vladislav Maslov, is the author of this stunning box. The work is called “Water Spirit”, and features a strange creature that lives in lakes and rivers. In ancient times people believed that any lake, river and even a pond is inhabited by water spirits and mermaids. Water-spirits are main characters of many Russian fairy-tales and stories.
The box depicts the Water-Spirit and his daughters, mermaids, peeping out of the massive columns of the underwater palace. Silver and gold powders help to create a sparkle of fishes' scales. Various water plants are inlaid with pieces of mother-of-pearl that shine brightly with green, blue, violet and pink undertones. Water foam, golden bubbles and whimsical water plants are painted along the edges of the lid, and used as a frame for the depicted scene. Maslov continues to paint water foam and water plants on the box's sides and on the box's exterior bottom. For additional decoration the box's sides are decorated with a wide band inlaid with mother-of-pearl pieces that shimmer with golden undertones. This band is framed with two thin gold lines.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The exterior of the piece is covered with black lacquer while the interior is covered with dark red lacquer. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the year of 2009 and the title inside the square pearl plate glued to the lid's interior.
