This charming box is a creation of Tatyana Dmitrieva. It depicts mother and her daughter skating on the skating-rink arranged just in front of the St. Isaac's Cathedral. It's evening, and the beautiful street-lamp illuminates happy faces of the skating people. In this scene the artist has masterfully expressed a magic atmosphere of pre-revolutionary St.-Petersburg.
Deep blue tones of oils help the artist to create a sensation of a winter evening. Silver powder used as underlayer for the oils shimmers beautifully through the architecture of the cathedral, through the elegant characters' costumes that reflect the 19th century fashion and through some other minor details. The costumes are also detailed with shining gold paint. Lustrous piece of gold metal leaf creates radiance around the street-lamp.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is studded with very thin gold lines that look spectacularly against the black background. A hinge is fastened to the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2008.
