Description:

This originally shaped box has been created by the famous Fedoskino artist, Alexander Chirkov. It continues Chirkov's series of works dedicated to the views of old Moscow. Here he has chosen to depict the Okhotniy Ryad Street situated not far from the Moscow Kremlin. Working on this box the artist has used the old photo of Moscow that can be seen on this site:

In this work the artist has masterfully expressed the romantic atmosphere of pre-revolutionary Moscow. The palette is filled with light grey and brown tones of oils. A large piece of mother-of-pearl is set into the center of the composition in the area where the red-bricked cathedral is depicted. Gold paint is used to paint the cupolas, to detail the architecture of the cathedrals, and also to paint the clouds in the sky and to highlight the cobblestone road. Silver powder shines through the oils decorating the architecture of the houses depicted in the foreground.
The scene is framed with a thin gold line. The box's sides are richly decorated. A wide ribbon that imitates a stone color (it is painted in a mixture of gold and silver powders) wraps around the box's sides. This ribbon is framed with two thin gold lines. On the box's front side the artist has painted an additional composition that depicts the Moscow Kremlin using brown oils.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the title (“Old Moscow”), the year of 2008 and the village of Fedoskino.
