Description:

Tatiana Levko is the talented Fedoskino artist who has been able to represent vividly the interior of a traditional Russian peasant house on this large oval box. In the center of the composition we can see a kind granny who offers tasty pies and sweet tea to her grandchildren. There is a shining golden samovar on the small stool in front of the table. The floor is covered with handmade carpets. From the left of the central scene the artist depicts the big chest where granny keeps her clothes and the mirror hanging on the wall. From the right of the central scene we can see the wooden bench and the red corner that is the most important element of the traditional Russian peasant house.
In old times all peasant houses had a "red" or "beautiful" (the Russian words derives from the same root) corner, in which the icons were placed. Russian peasants followed Orthodoxy, and therefore copies of Byzantine icons were placed in the family's personal alter. Here, prayers were said and the candles were burning.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Fedoskino and the year of 2010.
