Description:

One of the top Fedoskino artists, Sergey Knyazev, created this exquisite work. His otherworldly style and subtle palette are as unmistakable as they are stunning. This work reflects the artist's impressions from Lewis Carroll's classic tale "Through the Looking Glass".
The box depicts Alice who sits in the wonderful garden surrounded with roses and lilies, and holds the smiling Cheshire Cat on her palm. May be at this moment she ponders what the world is like on the other side of a mirror's reflection. This magic world is painted inside the large mirror, and Alice is able to step through the mirror to an alternative world, the Looking-Glass Land. The fantastic land looks like a huge chessboard inhabited by chess-pieces and other mythological creatures and characters.
The scene is painted in delicate pink and violet tones that help to reproduce vividly a magic atmosphere of the tale. In some parts of the composition this violet-pink palette is mixed with silver powder to create a sparkle from within. The fantastic world of the Looking-Glass Land is painted over mother-of-pearl inlay that shines with a variety of undertones. Mother-of-pearl inlays that shine brightly with green and blue undertones can be found in the flowers painted in the foreground and in the bows that decorate the girl's hair. Gold powder is used to highlight the flowers, the tree and the frame of the mirror.
The box's exterior is masterfully decorated. The box's lid can be opened with the help of the small transparent glass cube glued to one of the lid's sides. This glass cube looks like a radiant diamond. The depicted scene is framed with a gold wavy line. The exterior is covered with violet-pink tone mixed with silver powder and gold dust. This violet-pink area is studded with tiny gold stars and attractive flowers painted in oils and detailed with gold. The interior is covered with red lacquer mixed with shining red spangles. The final zest of the work is a rectangular piece of mirror glued to the box interior bottom. Along the golden frame that frames the mirror the artist has written the following fragment from Lewis Carroll's literary work: "... and again the boat glides silently along the waves, and the sun shines through the green branches of the tree, and the fairy-tales comes to us."
This box is made of high quality papier mache. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the lid's interior the artist has written in gold his name, the title, Fedoskino and the year of 2010.
