Description:

This small rectangular box is a creation of Eduard Makarov who is pioneering new frontiers in lacquer art. His style is unique to Fedoskino and the world, while his skill is already at a master's level without even reaching its peak. He shows his collectors that there are limitless ways to paint, decorate, and construct a work of art.
The theme of this box is E.T.A. Goffman's Christmas tale “The Nutcracker”. The plot of this tale is familiar to anyone, as it is one of the most popular children's tales.
In the composition the artist depicts the main character of the tale, the Nutcracker. Like in most of his works, here the artist has created a multi-layered composition to get a three-dimensional effect. The next distinctive Makarov's trait demonstrated here is application of tiny gold and aluminum shapes (stars, rhombs, circles, crescents, and triangles) that were punched out of a sheet of thin aluminum and gold and placed on the box by hand.
The box's exterior is of deep blue tone mixed with gold and silver powders. The exterior like the composition is richly decorated with tiny gold and aluminum shapes. The edges of the lid are adorned with three dimensional elements. The box's interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the lid's interior the artist has painted the title of the work, his name, Fedoskino, Russia and the year of 2010.
