The prominent and very popular Fedoskino artist, Marya Wagner, is the author of this large, festive box. It depicts a final scene from the Russian folk fairy-tale "The Magic Ring". In this tale the cat and the dog helped their master, a poor lad, to marry a princess. On the box's sides the artist continues to paint the fantastic fairy-tale landscape filled with mythical birds, forests, animals and medieval wooden Russian architecture.
The work is beautifully painted in Wagner's unmistakable mixture of fairy tale style realism and rich colors. The palette is filled with beautifully matched blue and green tones of oils. Silver and gold powders are mixed into the oils to decorate the characters's costumes, to detail the architecture and to fill the composition with a magic glow.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, and the village of Fedoskino.
