Description:

In this work talented and well-known Fedoskino artist Eduard Makarov shows his version of the fantasy novel "The Lord of the Rings" written by philologist J.R.R. Tolkien. Known for his rich, jewel like colors, shimmering atop gold metal leaf and mother-of-pearl inlays, Makarov creates exquisite and totally unique Russian lacquer boxes.
Using contrast warm, brown-orange and cold, dark blue and green oils the artist has managed to express a magical atmosphere of the novel. This atmosphere is strengthened by gold and silver powders as well as by mother-of-pearl inlay that shines through the oils in the middle part of the composition. As usual, artist Makarov makes the composition multi-layered to get a three-dimensional effect and create a dynamic experience for the eye.
On the box's sides and on its exterior bottom the artist has painted an imitation of stone using silver powders (silver veins are scattered against the black lacquered surface). On the sides this ornamentation is completed by silver scan patterns (tiny stars hand punched from silver metal sheets and glued to the box manually).
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the year of 2009, Russia and the village of Fedoskino.
Brilliant and rare piece, highly recommended!
