Description:

This beautiful dual-sided box was painted by Top 10 Fedoskino artist Dmitriy Rogatov under the influence of "The Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka" - a collection of short stories written by the famous writer Nikolai Gogol.
The work features two characters from the story "Christmas Eve". The witch Solokha is trying to steal the Moon on a one side and on the other one we can see Vakula the Smith flying to St.Petersburg on the Devil to get Cherevichki to his beloved Oksana.
The synopsis of the story can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherevichki
The scene is painted in mono-chromic style. A silver paint is used to detail the characters' costumes.
The box exterior is covered with a black lacquer. The box's interior is traditionally covered with red lacquer.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. It has a hinge at the bottom of the scenes, and rests on a flat bottom. Signed with the artist's name and a date on one side and the title on the other side.
Superb work!
