Top 10 Master Oleg Shapkin is one of Fedoskino's the most famous names. He is mentioned in every book written on Fedoskino lacquer miniature, and he himself has written very informative articles on this subject. He graduated from St. Petersburg's Art School and before that had the privilege of being one of Gennady Larishev's student among with Sergey Kozlov, the Rogatovs and Khomutinnikova.
During his career Shapkin won many honorable prizes, including the Artist's Union Prize of USSR (1985). His works are exhibited in different museums such as the State Russian Museum, the Moscow Regional Art Museum situated in the town of Istra and the State Historical Museum and now this box is dispalyed in Moscow state Museum of decorative ,folk and Applied Art in Moscow.
This impressive Shapkin's art work continues a series of his works with musicians. Here we can see a lady in a beautiful costume playing on the flute.
The palette incorporates brown and gray oils, with addition of gold and silver metal paints to give a feeling of magic and splendor. The artist demonstrates his unsurpassed skill while painting Lady's festive attire. Painting with an ultra fine brush, he creates exquisite gold lace texture of her dress. The branches of apple tree covered with gold, that are also expressively painted, shine in some places with lustrous silver paint. The painting is done over several pieces of mother-of-pearl!
The box's exterior is adorned with fantastically beautiful gold lace patterns!
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The interior of the box is covered with red lacquer. The lid is hinged to the left of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the artist's name and the name of a village of Fedoskino.
