Description:

This very nicely done portrait of Impress Katherine the Great is a copy from oil-on-canvas painted by famous Russian artist Feodor Rokotov. This portrait was painted by Rokotov in 1763 and now kept in the State Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow.
Catherine the Great was the Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796, and is well known for carrying out the policy of Westernization in Russia started by Peter the Great. She is considered to be one the brightest, talented and extraordinary personalities in the history of Russia. Being German by birth she managed to became the Empress of Russian and gain respect and sincere love of Russian people.
The portrait is painted by a talented Fedoskino artist, Alexander Dzibuk.
The sides of the box are decorated with so called "scan patterns" composed of tiny shapes hand punched from silver metal sheets and then painstakingly affixed by hand to the box.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the portrait, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and dated (2005).
