Description:

This extremely recognizable scene from the famous Russian fairy-tale entitled, "The Tale of Ruslan and Ludmila" was painted by Yevgeniy Dobrin. This is the battle between Ruslan and the Giant Head. Ruslan must slay the Head if he wants to acquire the necessary weapon needed to kill the wicked dwarf magician Chernomor.
Dobrin's favorite emerald green tones of tempera paints predominate here. The chain mail draped over the horse, the armor worn by Ruslan, the sword, and the Head's helmet all maintain a noble gold luster. Aluminum paint is used to detail the Head's helmet and to highlight the sky. The box's exterior is decorated with Dobrin's style luxuriant gold ornamentation accented with aluminum.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Inside the lid, Dobrin has written the title, the year of 2008, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholui miracle.
