Description:

This exceptional box was created by Victor Veselov from the village of Kholui. It is called "Summer of the Lord", and shows a scene from peasant life. It is the beginning of summer, the time when the Russians celebrate the St. John Baptist's Day (or the Ivan Kupala Day) which is the ancient pagan feast. Here we can see how the Russians celebrated this feast in ancient times. The group of girls sings and dances in a ring to the accompaniment of a shepherd's pipe while another girls throw garlands of flowers on the water trying to forecast their future. The lad who will take the garland out of water will be a husband of one of the girls. These scenes are painted on the box's sides while the lid's composition shows three angels hovering in the sky, and blessing the peaceful world of hard-working peasants.
Cool blue and green paints dominate here. Gold metal paint is used only to paint the tiny stars in the sky. The drawing is quite fine, with small details in the characters' faces and costumes, and the landscape. Each element is given precise dimension and depth, and just the right color is chosen.
The piece is constructed from paper-mache, and rests on four legs. Black lacquer is used to paint its exterior while red lacquer completes its interior. The lid removes easily without hinge. The bottom part is decorated with beautiful gold filigree designs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, the village of Kholui and the year of 1996.
