Description:

Sergey Dmitriyev is the gifted artist who painted this beautiful scene featuring Plyos, which is the ancient Russian town on the Volga river. Dmitriyev's skill is revered by collectors of his work; his ability to craft precise lines while not sacrificing any emotion is the mark of a truly great artist.
The palette is very bright and shows a representation of Plyos in autumn. Oranges and greens dominate here. Aluminum paint is used to paint the river, while the brilliance of foliage is strengthened with the help of gold paints.
The structure of the architecture is painted very precisely, each plank and angle defined and dimensionally shaded. The landscape is painted with smooth watercolor like brushstrokes, creating soft, rolling hillocks covered with masterfully painted gold crowned trees and green bushes. The crown of a big birch depicted from the left of the cathedral extends beyond the limits of the composition. It is a brilliant work; it can be the pearl of any collection!
The foundation of Plyos dates from the second half of the 12th century. The small fortress was founded in the northeast suburb of the Vladimir-Suzdal princedom as a fort of Russian colonization of the Volga bank occupied by the Finnish tribe. Together with other towns, Plyos fortress served as a strong point of Northeast Russia in the struggle against the state of Great Bulgar for the Volga trading way.
In 1980 within the territory of this ancient picturesque town the historical, art and architectural museum- reserve was founded. The most remarkable point of interest in Plyos is its unique architectural and landscaping complex. This complex includes about three hundred historical and cultural monuments. Among them there is the house-museum of the world famous landscape painter, Isaak Levitan, who worked there during 1888-1889 together with his friends, A.S. Stepanov and S.P. Kuvshinnikova. The result of this work is the brilliant painting "Evening. Golden Plyos" painted by Levitan in 1889, and many other masterpieces. In the building of former female grammar school there is the exhibition dedicated to the folk art of the Ivanovo region where displayed works of Palekh and Kholui lacquer miniature painters. Very often Plyos is called as "Switzerland on Volga", quiet and inviting-looking, it is one of the most charming nooks on the Volga river.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Kholuy. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold scrollwork frames the composition, while beautiful gold and aluminum ornamentation wraps around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the scene and rests on four feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("Autumn in Plyos"), the village of Kholui, and the year of 2005 in gold paints along the bottom of the composition.
