This adorable piece of Russian lacquer artistry has been painted by the talented Vladimir Karlov of Kholui. It is unique because it has been painted by means of natural pigments. Natural pigments are rocks and minerals such as clay, coal, limestone, etc. The technology of painting using natural pigments was applied by Russian icon painters during centuries. It helped to achieve rich and beautiful coloring; and this alluring composition can easily prove this fact.
The box is showing foggy sunrise, when two fishermans has started their day with a fish hunt. Nice wood-made Church is painted on the right side of the composition.Bright pink color is domintaed on this composition.
The lid of the box is decorated with intricate aluminum ornamentation. The sides are covered with a mixture of paints. The work is signed with the artist name, the village of Kholui and title at the bottom of the scene and on the interior of the lid.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests flat.
