This elegant box was painted by the well-known Mstera artist Valentin Tikhomirov, whose style of painting is always recognizable. It shows how Russian nobility of the nineteenth century amused themselves and rested. A loving couple sits in the garden on the riverbank, while another couple rides along the park road. In the background across the still waters of the river, a magnificent palace stands bold and erects among the trees. The composition is painted in usual for the Tikhomirov's style bright color palette based on beautiful combinations of blue and green tones. The clothing of these Russian aristocrats has obvious English influence, as the aristocracy strove to imitate Western fashion. The horses seem very alive, which is attributed to the great movement of line, not only in the horses, but in the entire composition.
The composition is framed with a gold line, while the edges of the lid are decorated with beautiful and elaborate floral patterns. The sides of the box are adorned with a wide band of intricate multicolored patterns that occupy the whole space of the box's sides. This decoration is an ideal compliment to the entire piece. The box is constructed out of paper-mache made in the village of Mstera. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box isn't hinged and rests on a flat bottom. The box is signed with the artist's name, village, and title. Attractive work painted by the talented artist!
